ProjectKatherine Howard’s Garden – RHS Hampton Court Flower Show 2009
This garden, which won a silver gilt medal was designed for a flirty teenage girl. It was full of pink and white flowers, with a bubbling fountain and a small oak dance floor. However the garden was overshadowed and dominated by a huge four poster bed planted with thyme the focus of Katherine’s brief life as Queen. Amongst the flowers were striped poles representing the Tudor courtiers who were always watching the queen.
The four previous queens loomed like shadows in the background, represented by four pale birches. Through the innocence of the garden ran a streak of wickedness and adultery – a strip of Crocosmia Lucifer. The garden ended abruptly at a black wall as the teenage Queen was beheaded.
